Security Cameras in Homes and Public Places: Recording Events with the Goal to Protect

Security cameras...you've seen them before. At parking lots, banks, department stores, gas stations, ATM locations, casinos, military installations, airports, prisons and school perimeters. Security cameras are video cameras set up in strategic location for the purpose of recording events.

Security cameras are being used in homes too. In fact, many homes install security cameras for a variety of purposes. You can even watch your home security camera from your computer with the correct software; even if you’re thousands of miles away. Gated residences or gated communities often have video security cams set up for monitoring who goes in and out.

Many working parents with small children install security cameras to monitor the babysitter's actions while they are away. For parents with grown children, security cameras help them know what their unsupervised teenage kids are up to whenever they are away at work.

The first recorded use of security cameras was in Germany in 1942. Designed by a German engineer named Walter Bruch, the security camera system (called CCTV or closed circuit television system back then) was installed specifically for the purpose of observing the launch of V2-rockets.

Types of Security Camera Equipment

There are as many different types of security cameras as there are reasons to install one.

For home use, the security video camera equipment tend to be less complicated. For instance, if you want to set up a video security camera system in your home, all you really need is an entry-level system, a couple of cameras, a small black and white television with a video video tape recorder and the right software. This would cost between $100 and $200, but if you want a wireless security camera system, you could have one set up for about $300 plus the software cost.s

Many large facilities such as banks and airports use several different types of camera security equipment such as wireless and wired security cameras. These places often have security cameras in plain sight as well as hidden video cameras, often with security guards watching the ongoing live feed. All of these devices capture images, recording them and storing them onto some form of electronic media (e.g., tape, disc or DVD).

Reasons for Installing Security Cameras in Homes

There are many reasons to install security cameras in and around the home. As mentioned earlier, a security camera installed in the house helps parents who enlist the services of a nanny can make sure that their children are being treated correctly. Parents whose teenage kids are often left alone in the house unsupervised are able to monitor what their children are doing when they are away at work.

“Security cameras in and around the home also ensure homeowners that hired help are doing their jobs or are not stealing from them” says professional digital photographer Bob Dale. Security cameras installed at the gate, driveway entrance or front door allow homeowners to see who is on their property at any given time.

Should You Install a Security Camera?

In today's world, security cameras are a necessity. Security cameras do have a lot of uses; they are used by retailers to protect themselves against loss, by banks, ATMs and convenience stores to prevent robberies, and by homeowners to make their homes more secure.

Installing a security camera system in and around your home is a good idea. However, it's best that you do some research and find out what type of security system is most appropriate for your home.
